I left this morning at about 6 AM with the intention of catching Josh and Jake. They left earlier. I caught up with them about 25 miles into the ride, just past Mt. Vernon. I had also passed Scott and Diane in Mt. Vernon.
As usual, I stopped at Beekman’s for ice cream, and I also stopped at Tender Tom’s for some turkey. This is the first time in all my RAGBRAI rides that I stopped at Tender Toms. The turkey sandwich I had was good and tender.
We stopped at a brand new elementary school in one town, to use the bathroom, and ran into Scott and Diane again. We all rode together for most of the rest of the day.
Josh broke a spoke just before we got to some town, and rode in to a bike repair shop to get it fixed. Cost him $15.
The next overnight town was Tipton, and our host “home” was worthless. They had us staying in the field next to a warehouse. There were two Kybos for about 100 campers. We showered at a car wash nearby for $5 apiece.
Jeff and I ate supper at a Pizza Hut about a block away from the camp. Zach, Ben and I drove to the grocery store and bought some pop and snacks.
At our campsite, we had absolutely no shade so we engineered a canopy, tying the corners of the canopy to the tops of four tents. It worked good but it was only big enough for about half the group.
I slept in Jeff’s tent this night because Jeff had room after Anna went home, and it would mean that Connie didn’t have to set up as many tents.
